Leadership Transition Marks New Era for West African Regional Bloc
President Bola Tinubu handed over the chairmanship of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone on Sunday, June 22, 2025, in Abuja, Nigeria. The handover ceremony took place during the 67th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.
Tinubu expressed confidence in the region's continued path toward peace, stability, and prosperity, citing a deep sense of fulfillment and optimism for West Africa's future. He thanked member states for their trust and support during his tenure as ECOWAS Chairman.
The outgoing Chairman described his tenure as a profound honor and privilege, urging leaders to remain resolute in deepening integration, protecting citizens, and building a prosperous, secure, and united West Africa.
President Bio outlined four key priorities for his tenure as ECOWAS Chairman, including restoring constitutional order, enhancing regional security cooperation, promoting economic integration, and building credible and effective ECOWAS institutions.
The handover marks a significant milestone in ECOWAS's history, with President Bio set to lead the regional bloc in addressing West Africa's challenges and opportunities.
