As tensions continue to rise between Nigeria and the United States, criticism has mounted against Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, over his recent comments directed at opposition leader Peter Obi.
Observers say Onanuga’s social media remarks have drawn attention away from ongoing diplomatic issues surrounding the U.S.–Nigeria dispute, which escalated following President Donald Trump’s controversial statements about Nigeria’s internal affairs.
Critics argue that rather than addressing the growing diplomatic unease and internal concerns about governance, Onanuga’s focus on opposition politics has further polarized public discussion. Supporters, however, defend his stance, insisting that he is correcting what they describe as “false political narratives.”
Political analysts note that the situation underscores a broader communication challenge within the administration, as public confidence remains divided over the handling of foreign and domestic issues. Calls have grown for the government’s media team to prioritize national unity and diplomatic stability over political exchanges.
Despite the online backlash, Onanuga has not withdrawn his statements and maintains that his interventions are necessary to clarify “misleading claims” against the government.
