The Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, has reacted to recent comments made by U.S. President Donald Trump about Nigeria, declaring that he is not intimidated and that Nigeria remains a sovereign nation.
Speaking to reporters at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, Senator Barau stated, “I’m not scared of Trump. I can say my mind. I’m a Nigerian, and Nigeria is a sovereign nation. I am a parliamentarian, and he is saying lies about our country.”
Barau emphasized that Nigeria’s legislative arm will continue to defend the country’s dignity and independence in the face of external criticisms. He also urged foreign leaders to respect Nigeria’s democratic institutions and avoid making unsubstantiated remarks that could undermine national unity.
Lawmakers present during the interview expressed support for the Deputy Senate President’s position, stressing that national leaders must speak with one voice in protecting the country’s image on the global stage.
The statement comes amid growing tension between Nigeria and the United States, following President Trump’s controversial comments that sparked diplomatic concerns and widespread reactions across the political landscape.
