The Lagos State Commissioner of Police has declared activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, wanted over alleged involvement in activities that reportedly disturbed public order in parts of the state. The announcement followed what police described as a breach of peace linked to a protest held over the weekend.
According to an official statement released by the Lagos State Police Command, Sowore is being sought for questioning after failing to honour previous invitations from the command. The statement alleged that some of his supporters were involved in acts that disrupted vehicular movement and threatened public safety during the demonstration.
Police authorities said efforts are underway to locate Sowore, assuring that the process will follow due legal procedures. The Commissioner of Police also called on members of the public to provide credible information that could assist in the investigation, emphasizing that the command remains committed to maintaining peace and security across the state.
Meanwhile, civil society organizations have reacted to the declaration, describing it as unnecessary and politically motivated. They urged the police to respect the rights of citizens to peaceful protest while ensuring that law and order are upheld without bias.
As of the time of filing this report, Sowore and his media team had not issued an official statement in response to the police declaration. The development has continued to generate debate among political observers and human rights advocates nationwide.
