The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, has dismissed claims of Christian persecution in Nigeria, stating that the nation’s Armed Forces remain neutral and committed to safeguarding all citizens regardless of religion or ethnicity.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, General Oluyede emphasized that the Nigerian military upholds the Constitution, which guarantees freedom of religion and protection of every citizen. He said the Armed Forces have no interest in religious divisions but are focused solely on national security and peacekeeping duties across the country.
The Defence Chief explained that several ongoing operations in the North and other regions involve both Christian and Muslim officers working together to combat terrorism, banditry, and other criminal activities. He said this cooperation reflects Nigeria’s unity and diversity rather than division.
General Oluyede urged local and international observers to verify information carefully before making statements that could misrepresent the situation in Nigeria. He added that unfounded claims of religious persecution undermine the morale of troops risking their lives to defend the country.
He concluded by reaffirming the military’s loyalty to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, noting that the Armed Forces will continue to ensure the safety, freedom, and rights of every Nigerian citizen, irrespective of faith or background.
