The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has executed one of its most sweeping disciplinary actions in recent years, formally expelling several influential members during its 2025 National Convention taking place in Ibadan, Oyo State. The move, which shocked many attendees and political observers, was announced after a tense closed-door session where the party’s disciplinary committee presented its final report.
Among those expelled are former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, senior legal practitioner Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN), former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, Hon. Austin Nwachukwu, and other members accused of long-term conduct inconsistent with party unity. Their names were read aloud as the hall erupted with reactions ranging from surprise to approval, depending on factional loyalties.
Delegates were informed that the decision followed months of internal investigations into alleged anti-party activities, including public statements, alliances, and actions viewed by party leadership as detrimental to PDP’s collective interests. According to the disciplinary committee, the individuals failed to adhere to repeated warnings and reconciliation efforts aimed at restoring cohesion.
Following the report, the expulsion motion was put to a vote and overwhelmingly supported, signaling a firm stance by the convention delegates who insist that the party must eliminate internal conflicts before focusing on its 2027 general election strategy. Party leaders emphasized that discipline remains non-negotiable for any member seeking to contribute to the party’s national comeback plans.
Political analysts believe the expulsion marks a turning point for the PDP, which has struggled with internal fractures since the last election cycle. The removal of these high-profile members may lead to new alignments within the party and potentially reshape the opposition landscape. As the convention continues, more resolutions and structural reforms are expected before the closing ceremony.
