President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Dr. John Nwabueze as the Tax Ombudsman of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The appointment marks a significant step toward strengthening oversight, fairness, and transparency within the nation’s tax system.
According to a statement released from the Presidency on Tuesday, the newly established Office of the Tax Ombudsman is designed to boost public trust in tax management and provide citizens and businesses with a formal channel to resolve disputes between taxpayers and tax authorities in a fair and impartial manner.
The office will serve as an independent institution, ensuring that taxpayers’ rights are respected while maintaining government accountability in tax-related matters. It is also expected to contribute to policy reforms that simplify tax compliance and reduce administrative burdens on small and medium-sized enterprises.
Dr. Nwabueze, a respected economist and governance expert, has over two decades of experience in fiscal policy and public finance management. His appointment has been welcomed by industry experts, who believe the role will improve Nigeria’s global tax perception and promote a more transparent business environment.
