Prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take firm diplomatic action against U.S. President Donald Trump following his reported threat of military intervention in Nigeria. Gumi described the remark as a serious affront to Nigeria’s sovereignty and urged the federal government to issue a strong response in defense of national pride and independence.

Speaking in Kaduna, Sheikh Gumi emphasized that Nigeria must not remain silent in the face of external intimidation. He said the country’s leadership should convey a clear message that Nigeria will not be subjected to any foreign control or threat, regardless of the source. According to him, mutual respect between nations remains the foundation of international peace and cooperation.

The cleric warned that Trump’s statement, if left unchallenged, could set a negative precedent and encourage further interference in African affairs. He advised President Tinubu to use diplomatic and legal means to register Nigeria’s protest through the African Union and the United Nations, describing such steps as necessary to protect the nation’s dignity.

Gumi further appealed to religious and political leaders across the country to unite in condemning what he termed a provocation against the Nigerian state. He noted that every responsible government must safeguard its territorial integrity and defend the interests of its people against external aggression.

As reactions continue to trail Trump’s remarks, many Nigerians on social media have echoed Sheikh Gumi’s position, calling for a balanced but firm response from the government. The Presidency has not yet issued an official statement regarding the cleric’s call, but public attention remains focused on the administration’s next move.
