There was heightened tension in the House of Representatives on Tuesday as members engaged in a heated exchange following a motion titled “Need to Counter Misleading International Narratives on Religious Killings in Nigeria.”
The session, which began calmly, soon turned chaotic as several lawmakers raised strong objections to the language of the motion. Some argued that it painted an incomplete picture of the country’s efforts to protect citizens across all faiths, while others maintained that the motion was essential to correct what they described as “false foreign reports.”
Eyewitnesses at the plenary said raised voices filled the chamber as legislators from different party lines shouted over each other, prompting the presiding officer to repeatedly call for order. Security personnel within the hall were seen moving closer to the gallery area as tensions escalated.
The motion, sponsored by a northern representative, sought to urge the Ministry of Information and National Orientation to begin an international media engagement campaign to “present Nigeria’s true image” on religious freedom and interfaith relations.
The debate was later stepped down temporarily after the Speaker intervened and appealed for calm, promising that the matter would be revisited after further consultations among party leaders and relevant committees.
