A member of the United States Congress, Riley Moore, has accused the Federal Government of Nigeria of failing to account for the billions of dollars in military assistance it has received from Washington in recent years. Moore made the remarks while addressing a policy review session on foreign aid and human rights at the U.S. Capitol.
He alleged that despite continuous financial and logistical support to Nigeria’s armed forces, reports of killings targeting Christian communities in several regions persist without clear government accountability. According to him, such incidents raise serious questions about how international security assistance is being utilized.
“The United States has provided substantial aid to Nigeria to fight terrorism and protect civilians,” Moore said. “However, the ongoing violence, particularly against Christian populations, remains deeply concerning. The Nigerian government must demonstrate transparency and measurable progress in protecting its citizens.”
The accusation adds to growing scrutiny of U.S.–Nigeria defense cooperation, which has included sales of aircraft, training programs, and counterterrorism partnerships. Analysts believe the latest statement may increase diplomatic tension between Abuja and Washington if not carefully managed.
As of press time, Nigerian authorities have not officially responded to the allegations. However, senior government officials have in the past maintained that all foreign military support is transparently managed and directed toward strengthening national security and counterinsurgency operations.
