President says FAAC allocations may be affected if states fail to implement court-backed financial directives

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a warning to state governors regarding the implementation of a Supreme Court directive on the direct disbursement of funds. The president emphasized that the ruling requires compliance without delay and should be executed as ordered by the court.

Speaking on the matter, President Tinubu stated that the Supreme Court had clearly directed that funds be paid directly to the intended beneficiaries. He noted that while the federal government has the authority to enforce compliance through executive action, he has chosen to give state governments time to implement the ruling voluntarily.

The president explained that failure to comply could result in financial consequences for states through the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC). According to him, continued non-implementation may lead to reduced allocations during subsequent FAAC disbursements.

President Tinubu stressed that his approach so far has been guided by cooperation and respect for state authorities. However, he made it clear that this approach would not be indefinite if the required steps are not taken by governors.

The comments have drawn attention to ongoing discussions around fiscal responsibility, constitutional compliance, and the balance of power between federal and state governments. Analysts say the statement underscores growing pressure on states to align financial practices with judicial decisions.

As reactions continue, attention is now focused on how state governments will respond to the warning and whether implementation measures will be put in place ahead of future FAAC meetings.
