The Federal Government of Nigeria has removed Meta Platforms Inc., owner of Facebook, and Elon Musk’s X Inc., formerly known as Twitter, from its amended cyberbullying charges filed against politician and activist Omoyele Sowore.
The adjustment follows a revision of the original charge, which had listed the social media companies alongside Sowore in connection with alleged online conduct described by the prosecution as cyberbullying-related offences.
According to the amended filing, the case now focuses solely on the allegations against Sowore, with Meta and X Inc. no longer named as defendants in the matter before the court.
The removal of the companies represents a significant shift from the initial framing of the case, which had drawn public attention due to the inclusion of major global technology firms.
Legal observers note that amended charges are not unusual in criminal proceedings and often reflect a reassessment of legal strategy or jurisdictional considerations by prosecutors.
Sowore, a former presidential candidate and publisher, has been a prominent critic of government policies and actions, with several of his legal encounters in recent years attracting national and international attention.
Neither Meta nor X Inc. has been listed in the revised charge sheet, and no further obligations or accusations against the companies were outlined in the amended filing.
As of the time of this report, there has been no official public statement from the Federal Government explaining the specific reasons for removing the technology companies from the case.
The court is expected to proceed with the matter based on the amended charges as presented.
