NIGERIA INCREASES FEES FOR DRIVER'S LICENSES AND NUMBER PLATES

New Price Structure Takes Effect June 8, 2025

The Joint Tax Board (JTB) has approved a new price structure for driver's licenses and number plates in Nigeria, effective June 8, 2025. According to the new rates, driver's licenses for motor vehicles will now cost ₦15,000 for a three-year validity period and ₦21,000 for a five-year validity period. Tricycle operators will pay ₦7,000 for a three-year license and ₦11,000 for a five-year license.

This change is expected to impact millions of Nigerians who rely on driving as a means of transportation or livelihood. The increase in fees has been justified as a measure to enhance the quality of services and documentation provided by the licensing authorities. However, the move may also be seen as an additional financial burden on citizens, particularly those in the lower-income bracket.

The new price structure is part of broader efforts to modernize and streamline the process of obtaining driver's licenses and vehicle registration in Nigeria. The authorities hope that the increased revenue will be used to improve infrastructure and services related to road safety and vehicle regulation. Despite the increase, many Nigerians are likely to comply with the new fees to ensure they can continue to operate their vehicles legally.

As the new rates take effect from June 8, 2025, citizens are advised to familiarize themselves with the updated pricing and plan accordingly. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other relevant agencies are expected to provide further guidance and support to ensure a smooth transition to the new system.
