Islamic cleric and public commentator, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has condemned alleged United States military involvement in Nigeria, calling on the Nigerian government to immediately suspend any form of cooperation linked to military action within the country. His remarks were made amid growing public discussion over foreign involvement in Nigeria’s counterterrorism efforts.
Sheikh Gumi warned that continued collaboration with foreign military forces, particularly in relation to airstrikes against terrorist groups, could have unintended consequences for national security. According to him, such actions may deepen instability rather than resolve the ongoing security challenges facing the country.
He argued that military airstrikes against terrorists could attract more armed groups into Nigeria, escalating violence and expanding the scope of conflict. Gumi stated that Nigeria risks becoming a wider battleground if foreign military actions are allowed to continue unchecked.
The cleric reiterated his long-standing position that negotiation and dialogue remain more effective approaches to addressing terrorism and armed insurgency. He maintained that engagement and non-military strategies could reduce hostilities and prevent further radicalisation.
Sheikh Gumi also cautioned the federal government that failure to reassess its approach could lead to long-term consequences. He urged authorities to prioritise Nigeria’s sovereignty and internal stability in all security-related decisions.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from the Nigerian government or the United States authorities regarding Sheikh Gumi’s claims or the alleged military cooperation referenced in his statement.
